Tell us about rare coins. What is a rare coin?
Jack: A rare coin is a coin that meets certain requirements to be ‘rare.’ A rare coin has to have a limited amount of them still available. Severely limited.
This stuff the mint sells today that they’re only making six million of, and telling you that that’s a limited edition is ridiculous. A rare coin would probably have an availability or a mintage of somewhere in the hundreds of coins. Or less. Sometimes less than a hundred.
Also, if a coin made it into circulation, did they survive in good condition or did they all get wore out and used up? So the rarity might be condition. Could be they made twenty million of something but there’s no coins left that have any kind of look left to them, they’re all wore out. So one that’s really nice is going to be rare.
A rare coin is a coin that meets certain requirements to be ‘rare.’
Frank: Just like about six weeks ago one of the networks ended up telling all their fans on TV that there was a penny that was worth millions and they got the wrong date. And so we got like 150 phone calls from TV fans that came in about the 1944 penny.
Jack: They all had the 1944 penny worth ten thousand dollars. It went on for weeks. It’s finally tapered off. The deal is that there was a few pennies made in 1943, because they were steel, there was a few made on copper and they’re rare in value. And in 1944 they went back to copper and there were a few of them that were made on steel. So those are rare in value. So they blabbered all this all over TV about the 1943 and ’44 pennies. Of course everybody runs to the drawer and looks, “Oh, look, I’ve got a ’43 and a ’44!” Which they made billions of, they only made six of the others that were the off-metal ones. So everybody who found one of course had the billion dollar lottery ticket, and called us up.
And they all looked on the net to find the rare coin dealers in Tampa and found your store. Well, as the top dealer in rare coins in Tampa, what interesting things have happened?
Jack: Well, we had the guy come in with the Mint State 68 Four Dollar Stella that was a million dollar coin and showed it to us. We didn’t buy it, but that’s a rare coin.
No kidding, a million dollar coin walked right in here?
Jack: Guy had several millions of dollars, in this case, in rare coins. But he’s a dealer, he’s a high powered dealer. That’s all he did is deal in super-rarities. And you don’t buy those, they don’t show up from the public. Those rarities have been rarities forever, and they’re all closely held in tightly held situations.
Those probably end up at the big auctions.
Jack: Yes. But you don’t see that stuff. It’s real unusual to see a coin come in the door here that’s worth more than a thousand dollars. I’m not talking about gold coins. Gold coins, yeah, you’ve got a thousand dollars worth of gold in it. But see, a numismatic coin that’s worth a thousand bucks, you almost never see it.
A rare coin would probably have an availability or a mintage of somewhere in the hundreds of coins. Or less.
What kind of rare coins do you see?
Jack: We see ten million pieces of common coins. And then we see some of what we call collectors coins. Coins that are ten dollars to a thousand dollars. That’s what we see.
And what kind of coins would those be?
Jack: Pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, halves, dollars.
All American money?
Jack: Yes. And foreign money.
Foreign money too. We’re not talking about paper here, we’re talking about rare coins in Tampa. Collectors coins.
Jack: We also want your paper money.
